Church Street, in High Town, houses the original Almshouses dating back to 1635. During the war the cottage next to the Almshouses was destroyed by enemy fire and its elderly occupant was killed. Her relatives donated the site to the Almshouses to be used as a garden of remembrance and this has remained so ever since.

The original 10 bedsit rooms have been converted over the years and there are now 4 spacious flats occupied by elderly and/or disabled.
