Palmers Hospital, in St Leonards Close, High Town, dates back to 1687 and was built for widows of the town.

 

It was built with money endowed by Colonel Billingsley's family who was slain on the adjacent Churchyard whilst in the services of Charles I.

It was rebuilt in 1889 and there are now 8 flats occupied by single ladies who are elderly and/or disabled.
